I develop interactive computer systems to design the forms and surface patterns for these hand-made functional ceramics.

The software takes a live video feed or still image and feeds it back on itself with different local symmetry constraints folded in.  Symmetry parameters such as scale, rotation, lattice angle, color transformations, and symmetry type can be adjusted in real time using a physical controller.  My goal in developing the software is to give the user the feeling of exploring freely in a vast other-dimensional space of pattern and color, selecting snapshots to “bring back.”

I use 3D printing to make a model for each design, with decorative patterns embossed on the surface.  I take plaster molds from these models and use the molds to cast the forms in porcelain.  To finish each pot, I use a variety of materials and techniques to create visual contrast from the relief patterns on the pots.
